A major fire outbreak on Sunday morning partially destroyed the Kugbo Furniture Market in Abuja, one of the largest furniture hubs in the Federal Capital Territory.
According to the Federal Fire Service (FFS), the fire—suspected to have been caused by an electrical surge—broke out in the early hours, with highly flammable materials in the market aiding its rapid spread.
A distress call received at about 8:37am prompted the immediate deployment of firefighters from the FFS National Headquarters Special Unit, supported by crews from the Nyanya Fire Station and the FCT Fire Service.
After more than three hours of intense firefighting, the blaze was successfully contained, preventing it from engulfing the entire market. Authorities estimated that properties worth about ₦1.8 billion were saved, although the total value of the market exceeds ₦2 billion.
The Controller General of the Federal Fire Service, Olumode Samuel Adeyemi, praised the firefighters for their professionalism and bravery.
He emphasized the importance of early emergency reporting, noting that prompt alerts significantly reduce losses during fire incidents. Adeyemi also commended the FCT Fire Service for its continued collaboration in joint emergency responses.
No casualties were reported.
