The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced that Nigeria’s 2027 Presidential and National Assembly elections will be held on February 20, 2027.
INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, disclosed the election timetable on Friday during a press conference in Abuja. He also confirmed that governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections across the country will take place on March 6, 2027.
According to the commission, the dates are in line with constitutional provisions and the electoral calendar framework designed to ensure adequate preparation for the nationwide polls.
The announcement comes amid growing public concern over the delayed passage of the amended Electoral Act currently before the National Assembly.
Political stakeholders and civil society groups have called for timely reforms to strengthen transparency, logistics, and the overall credibility of the electoral process ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Prof. Amupitan assured Nigerians that the commission remains committed to conducting free, fair, and credible elections, adding that further details regarding party primaries, campaigns, and other critical timelines will be made available in due course.
With the official dates now set, political parties, aspirants, and stakeholders are expected to begin strategic preparations for what is anticipated to be another defining electoral cycle in Nigeria’s democratic journey.
