The Nigerian military has launched Operation Ember Guard to boost security across the South West geopolitical zone amid intelligence reports of potential security threats during the festive and post-festive period.
The operation began on December 23, 2025, and will run until January 15, 2026, with the aim of safeguarding lives and property, ensuring smooth movement of people and goods, and maintaining peace across the region.
Speaking at the flag-off ceremony, the Theatre Commander of the Joint Task Force South West, Operation AWATSE, Rear Admiral Abubakar Mustapha, said the operation was triggered by actionable intelligence pointing to a likely increase in criminal activities during the yuletide season.
He explained that Operation Ember Guard aligns with the strategic vision of the Chief of Defence Staff, General Olufemi Oluyede, which emphasizes proactive, intelligence-driven operations and strong inter-agency collaboration to prevent security threats before they escalate.
Troops drawn from the Armed Forces, working alongside other security agencies, have been deployed to key locations across the South West to conduct patrols, surveillance, and rapid-response operations.
Rear Admiral Mustapha assured residents that the military would operate professionally and with respect for human rights, urging the public to continue their lawful activities without fear. He also called on citizens to support the operation by providing timely and credible information to security agencies.
Operation Ember Guard is expected to complement existing security measures and ensure a peaceful festive season and beyond in the South West.
