President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the establishment of a new Nigerian Army Depot in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State, marking a major step in the ongoing efforts to strengthen the nation’s military training and manpower development.
The new depot becomes one of only three Nigerian Army training depots in the country, expanding from the long-standing single depot in Zaria, Kaduna State, which had served as the primary training base for recruits for decades.
With the latest development, the Nigerian Army will now have three depots strategically located across the country:
Kaduna
Osogbo
Abakaliki
The establishment of the Abakaliki depot is expected to enhance regional military presence, improve training capacity, and create new opportunities for youth enlistment in the South-East region.
Defence analysts have hailed the move as a bold step toward decentralizing military training and strengthening national security architecture under the Tinubu administration.
The Ministry of Defence and Nigerian Army Headquarters are expected to release further details on the timeline for construction, recruitment, and operational commencement in the coming weeks.
