No fewer than three major fire outbreaks were recorded across the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) within a 32-hour period, leading to estimated losses of over ₦650 million, the Federal Fire Service (FFS) has confirmed.
According to a statement issued by the FFS spokesperson, DCF P. O. Abraham, the incidents occurred at different locations in January 2026 and were largely caused by suspected electrical surges and overloading.
The most recent fire broke out in the early hours of January 19, 2026, at Corner Shops, Chalyx Close, Abacha Road, Maraba, along the Abuja–Keffi axis, destroying six retail outlets. Firefighters, supported by the Nyanya Station, were able to contain the blaze and saved property worth about ₦100 million out of an estimated ₦400 million exposed.
The incident followed earlier fires at the Kugbo Furniture Market and Leventis Plaza, all occurring within the same short timeframe.
Despite the losses, the FFS said prompt response helped save property valued at over ₦2.8 billion across the three emergencies.
Reacting to the trend, the Controller-General of the Federal Fire Service, Olumode Samuel Adeyemi, warned residents and business owners against electrical overloading, stressing that the incidents were preventable.
The Fire Service urged the public to observe basic safety measures, such as switching off electrical appliances when not in use, and to report emergencies promptly via the FFS emergency line 0803 200 3557.
