Taraba State witnessed a major political shake-up today as the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. John Kizito Bonzena, led all Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) members of the Assembly in a mass defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The unprecedented move instantly shifts the balance of power within the state legislature and marks one of the most significant political realignments in Taraba’s recent history.
The lawmakers announced their defection during plenary on Monday, citing the need to align with what they described as the “new political direction” of the state.
Their decision comes just days before Governor Agbu Kefas is expected to formally join the APC on Wednesday, November 19, in a grand ceremony scheduled to hold at the Jolly Nyame Stadium, Jalingo.
Political analysts say today’s mass defection is a strategic consolidation ahead of the governor’s anticipated move, signalling the complete collapse of the PDP’s structure in Taraba State.
With the Speaker and all PDP lawmakers now in the APC, the ruling party at the national level is poised to take full control of Taraba’s political machinery as the 2027 general elections draw nearer.
Meanwhile, preparations continue across the state for Wednesday’s high-profile reception ceremony, which is expected to draw top APC leaders from across the federation.
