The Nigerian Senate has confirmed the appointment of retired Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, as the nation’s new Minister of Defence.
Gen. Musa’s confirmation came through a voice vote on Wednesday after a detailed screening session where lawmakers questioned him on national security strategies and his vision for the armed forces.
The retired military chief had only exited service about 40 days ago before President Bola Ahmed Tinubu nominated him to lead the Ministry of Defence. His nomination was formally transmitted to the Senate on Tuesday and swiftly taken up for consideration.
During the screening, several senators commended Gen. Musa’s service record and expressed confidence that his experience in counterterrorism and joint military operations would strengthen Nigeria’s ongoing efforts to restore peace and stability across the country.
With the Senate’s approval now secured, Gen. Musa is expected to assume office immediately and work closely with the nation’s security agencies to confront persistent challenges including terrorism, banditry, kidnapping, and rising insecurity nationwide.
His appointment marks a continuation of President Tinubu’s push to restructure and fortify the defence sector in line with the Renewed Hope Agenda.
