Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 general election, has distanced himself from verbal attacks directed at leaders within the opposition coalition, warning that such conduct does not reflect the values of the Obidient movement.
Speaking on Tuesday during an engagement at the Obidient movement’s secretariat, Obi said he has never encouraged supporters to insult or abuse leaders of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) or any other coalition partners. He stressed that individuals who engage in name-calling while claiming to act in his name are criminals and not genuine members of the Obidient movement.
Obi explained that he maintains cordial relationships with key figures across the opposition coalition and would never endorse personal attacks against them.
According to him, mutual respect remains the foundation of the alliance and must be preserved if the coalition is to succeed.
“Let me be clear, most of the things you hear are done by criminals who are not Obidient people,” Obi said. “You will never see me call anyone a bad name. We are not asking for division.”
He urged members of the coalition, including ADC supporters, to shun abusive language and focus on issue-based politics, insisting that insults and internal hostility have no place in their collective struggle for good governance.
