The Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ola Olukoyede, has denied claims of persecution against former Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami (SAN), stating that investigations into Malami began long before his appointment.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Olukoyede said he inherited the case file and insisted the probe was professional and non-political. According to him, the investigation has lasted nearly two and a half years and only moved forward after investigators were satisfied with the evidence.
He also dismissed allegations that the probe was driven by personal vendetta linked to the Justice Ayo Salami-led panel, noting that he was neither indicted by the panel nor has he seen its report. Olukoyede added that he was later cleared by EFCC investigators and received official clearance from the presidency.
The comments come days after a Federal High Court ordered the interim forfeiture of 57 properties allegedly linked to Malami and two of his sons, valued at about ₦213.2 billion. The EFCC says the assets, spread across several states, are suspected proceeds of unlawful activities.
