Kwara Police, Vigilantes Foil Kidnap Plot in Moro LGA, Neutralise Suspect and Recover AK49 Rifle

A combined team of fully armed operatives from the Kwara State Police Command and local vigilantes on Thursday afternoon thwarted an attempted kidnap operation in Adekanbi Village, Moro Local Government Area of the state.

The security team engaged the kidnappers in a fierce gun duel, resulting in the death of one suspect, while others escaped with gunshot injuries. An AK49 rifle and 32 rounds of live ammunition were recovered from the scene.

According to reports, the armed gang had been planning a kidnapping operation in the area before security operatives, acting on credible intelligence, stormed their hideout with the support of community vigilantes.

Confirming the development in a statement issued Friday evening, the Police Public Relations Officer, Ejire Adetoun Adeyemi, said the operation was carried out following actionable intelligence that bandits were occupying a fortified hilltop in Adekanbi.

“Acting on actionable intelligence on 13th November 2025 at about 1000hrs, police operatives and vigilante members executed a rapid tactical deployment to Adekanbi Village via Bode-Saadu, where armed bandits were sighted occupying a fortified hilltop.

“On arrival, the hostile elements opened fire, prompting a swift and superior counter-engagement by the security team. The overwhelming response forced the criminals to abandon their position with suspected gunshot injuries. A post-operation sweep led to the recovery of a neutralised suspect, one AK49 rifle, and 32 rounds of live ammunition.”

Adetoun noted that the successful operation reflects the command’s improved tactical capability and reinforced rapid-response strategy under the leadership of the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, PhD., NPM.

She added:
“The Command assures the public of sustained offensive operations across all identified flashpoints to maintain safety and security statewide.”

Security sources confirmed that surveillance has been intensified in the axis to track the fleeing suspects and prevent future attacks.
