The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has announced plans to prosecute popular TikToker Habeeb Hamzat, widely known as Peller, following a road crash reportedly linked to his use of social media while driving.
The Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, expressed serious concern over the incident, describing it as part of a growing trend of celebrities and social media influencers flouting traffic regulations in pursuit of online attention.
In a statement signed by the FRSC spokesperson, Olusegun Ogungbemide, Mohammed said Peller’s actions were dangerous and unlawful, warning that they could have led to severe injuries or loss of lives.
“Live streaming, content creation, or engaging in any activity that distracts a driver while on the road is a direct violation of traffic regulations and endangers all road users,” the statement read.
Following the incident, the FRSC boss directed the Lagos State Sector Commander to commence all necessary legal procedures for the prosecution of the TikToker, citing offences including reckless driving, distracted driving, and use of a mobile phone while driving.
Mohammed also called on actors’ guilds, entertainment bodies, and influencer networks to educate their members on responsible road use, stressing that public figures carry significant influence, particularly among young Nigerians.
“Celebrities must serve as ambassadors of road safety, not symbols of recklessness,” he said.
The FRSC warned that it would apply the full weight of the law against anyone engaging in unsafe driving practices, regardless of status or popularity, emphasizing that no social media trend is worth endangering lives.
The Corps further urged Nigerians to remember that public roads are shared spaces governed by laws designed to protect everyone, encouraging the public to report dangerous driving behaviours to support collective road safety efforts.
