A major fire outbreak on Wednesday evening gutted parts of the Great Nigeria Insurance House, a 22-storey commercial building located on Martins Street, Lagos Island.
The fire reportedly started around 5:00 p.m. from an office on the fourth floor of the building, which is largely used as a warehouse for clothing materials, alongside corporate offices and shops.
According to the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), the fire quickly spread to other floors before emergency responders arrived. The agency’s Permanent Secretary, Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, confirmed that firefighters were still battling the blaze and carrying out rescue operations as of Wednesday night.
Similarly, the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, through its Controller-General Margaret Adeseye, stated that the fire affected up to the fifth floor of the high-rise building. She added that no casualties had been recorded at the time of reporting.
The cause of the fire is yet to be determined, while investigations and firefighting efforts remain ongoing.
Authorities have urged residents and business owners in the area to remain calm and cooperate with emergency responders as efforts continue to fully contain the incident.
