The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced a revision to the timetable for the 2027 general elections, fixing January 16, 2027, as the new date for the Presidential and National Assembly polls.
The commission also scheduled February 6, 2027, for the Governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections across the country.
The development was disclosed on Thursday in a statement issued by Mohammed Haruna, INEC National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee.
INEC explained that the adjustment became necessary following the repeal of the Electoral Act, 2022, and the enactment of the Electoral Act, 2026, which required a review of the earlier election schedule.
Prior to the revision, the commission had slated February 20, 2027, for the Presidential and National Assembly elections and March 6, 2027, for the Governorship and State Assembly polls.
The electoral body assured Nigerians that the updated timetable aligns with the provisions of the new electoral law and is aimed at ensuring adequate preparation for a smooth and credible electoral process.
With the revised dates now confirmed, political parties, aspirants, and stakeholders are expected to recalibrate their strategies as preparations intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections.
