The Bayelsa State Commissioner of Police, CP Iyamah Edebor, has ordered the arrest of police officers caught in a viral video assaulting a tricycle (keke) rider in Yenagoa.
The video, widely shared on social media, shows the officers chasing, threatening, and brutally beating the rider, who claimed he was ill and on his way to seek medical treatment. Despite his pleas, the officers allegedly shoved him to the ground, assaulted him, and dragged him into a nearby bush where he was beaten with boots and a tyre.
The officers were also seen confronting a resident who attempted to record the incident, insisting that citizens had no right to film them. After the assault, the injured rider accused the officers of removing items, including tyres, from his tricycle.
Reacting to the incident, the Bayelsa State Police Command described the officers’ actions as unacceptable and contrary to professional policing standards. In a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Musa Mohammed, the command confirmed that the officers involved have been arrested and that disciplinary proceedings have commenced in line with the Police Act and other regulations.
CP Edebor reassured residents of the command’s commitment to protecting human rights and ensuring lawful, professional policing across the state, urging the public to remain calm and continue supporting efforts to maintain peace and order.
